3. The Serenity Mantra Beware the Dream SnatcherIt was unsettling watching a man in a recent workshop I facilitated appear bored, semi-participative and judgmental. Even when I suggested we do a group brainstorm to help move this person from their self declared “fog” they did not accept the offer. Most unsettling of all, was seeing this person light up with a very viable business idea - well-suited to his background skills and interests - and then almost as quickly the light died. What thinking had snuffed this small flame of desire, hope and possibility so quickly? How often do our critical, insecurity-driven thoughts snatch our dreams before we’ve had a moment to relish them? No wonder so very many people end up feeling like lost souls, confused and uncertain about what work they would enjoy. Time and again, that small voice of inner truth is brushed aside, demeaned and dismissed.
The Power of What If’sNot only do we lose touch with our dreams and gifts but also, our self trust, self confidence and self esteem become eroded. How often have you wanted to do something, try something new, take a risk, and found yourself saying, “Yes, but, what if…?” “What if I started my own business and it failed?; What if we can never afford to buy a house? What if…?” My husband brought my attention to an article by Jim Rohn, the business philosopher, who recommends we use the power of words to work for us rather than against our dreams. Instead, let us use those “What ifs” to feel the wonder of possibility. “What if I started my own business and it was a great success? What if we could buy a house? What if…” Try out this simple technique. My husband and I have found it stimulating rather than the negative “what if” litany that drains energy and ideas. To read Jim Rohn’s article on the “Subtlety of Words.” Click this link. The Serenity MantraAlso of great aid to me in dealing with my own insecurities and inadequacies has been the book, “The Power of Self Coaching,” by Dr. Joseph Luciani. One of the many powerful techniques I picked up in this read was: when we are feeling worried, anxious, guilty, or afraid to clearly observe our thoughts, and ask ourselves, “Is this fact or fiction?” It is amazing how much crazy stuff most people just make-up and imagine in their minds. Mostly our fears are based on absolute fiction!
Following are Dr. Luciani’s “Serenity Mantra’s” that I belief are worthwhile incorporating into our lives. To visit his site go to

"Whenever you’re confronted with a problem, concern, or worry and need to let go, repeat these three simple truths. They will put you in the right frame of mind for dealing with any struggle. I suggest you write them down on the back of a business card. Whenever you find your mind spinning with reflexive, insecure thinking, read the truths. If necessary, read them over and over again, mantra like. 1. I will let life unfold. There are obstacles but no dead ends. Sometimes, when you’re walloped by life, you may feel that there are no answers to life’s difficulties. Rather than dead ends, a more apt perception would be bottlenecks. Because of Reflexive Thinking, you may find yourself constricted or bogged down--but not dead-ended. What feels to be hopeless is only a distortion created by insecurity. Keep in mind that insecurity will own you if it can convince you things are hopeless. 2. I trust that my instincts and intuition will serve me. When the path is unknown or murky and you find yourself bogged down with congested overthinking, it’s time for a risk. It may be hard to convince yourself to risk trusting yourself and life, but if you’re willing, take the shot and let go, let life. Things can happen, shift, and change, but only if you stop your bottleneck thinking. 3. Every problem has a solution, and sometimes I have to wait for an answer. Part of risking is the rational understanding that every problem has a solution. You have to be disciplined enough to tell yourself that you may have to wait for it. Insecurity, if anything, is impatient. As your anxiety or panic grows, you become more insistent on demanding an answer--now! Just because you don’t know or can’t see the answer don't think it doesn’t exist. . . only that it’s beyond your view. . With a willingness to trust, you put yourself in the best possible position to create the life you want. As you practice the Serenity Mantra it helps to remind yourself of the countless problems and worries that have come and gone in your life. How many problems have you solved to date? One thousand? Fifty thousand? Somehow you’ve managed to survive, to figure out, solve, get around, under, or over every obstacle. Right? Every crisis eventually becomes history and you move on. What makes you think that today’s worries will be any different?"
So my friends, let us all practice listening to the voice of our dreams and cultivating more serenity in our lives. Herein, is our lifework.
