Blessings of Job Loss

Although difficult to see at the time, a job loss or stressful work environment can be a blessing in disguise. In these situations we are often forced to address an issue we may have ignored for a long time. Unforeseen job loss or job angst may reveal the need for a fresh start; a new challenge; or for work that is more in alignment with one’s talents, well-being and values. For many years these yearnings may have gone unaddressed because the pay cheque was the priority.

First off, to see the blessing in all of this avoid the mentality, “Because I don’t have a great job (and I have no idea what it is) I am a loser, living a life of mediocrity and unfulfilled potential.” If you feel you have overstayed your time in one job (whether you have lost it now or are still there) now is the time to honour and respect your work.

Honour and Respect Your Life!

As we honour and respect our past work and past life; the honour and respect we feel for ourselves is deepened. Stop now and applaud the generosity, responsibility, determination, loyalty, and selflessness you modeled throughout your years of faithful employment. Through true self-tributes like this, we grow the self esteem and the being needed to make the change we desire.

Taking this one step further we must let go of focusing on the skills, education, experiences we think we lack. Instead, ask yourself; “What have I done in my work I feel proud of?” and “What were the tasks, interactions, moments I truly enjoyed?” Write three or four (or more!) detailed stories in answer to these questions, and connections to your passion and talents will emerge.

Will you take this time to self reflect and deepen your appreciation of your self, your abilities, your life? If you will, the blessings of job loss or job angst will slowly begin to appear. Through self-reflection and appreciation (as opposed to worry and self-denigration) you’ll be more able to know and explore your interests.

Fan the Flame of Passion

As these tiny flames of interest and passion re-ignite we must not throw the icy waters of “reality” onto them! Often I hear the flame of passion in a person’s voice only to see it doused within the same breath: “But I have to be realistic because of my age, health issues, financial/family situation, lack of education/experience, fill-in-the-blank…” And usually, these people are quite adamant about why their situation is so impossible.

Folks, you have plenty of time to be realistic! Most people are far too realistic, far too soon. Upon its fledgling flight our passion is stoned by so-called reality, “it’s not possible because…” Yet, clearly all the “buts, because’s, can’t’s, shouldn’t’s…” are based on heresy and fear rather than on honest self-reflection and thorough research.

So please, give yourself the gift of allowing your ideas, dreams, hopes, possibilities, passions, talents to surface. Fan the flame and write about them, talk about them with supportive people, and fully research the possibilities before squelching them as they rise.

In doing this, you will more readily be able to see and receive the blessings of job loss and job angst coming your way.
