The One True Light
1. Deep Reverence
2. Dark Shadows Loom
3. Behold the Light!
4. A Metaphor for Life
Deep ReverenceThe deep reverence, stillness and wholeness invoked within my husband and I during our camping vacation remains kindled within. Each day we sat humbled before the great Arrow Lakes - stretched wide to Saddle Mountain - which threw her granite, snow-clad tip into the brilliant blue. No diesels, drunks or night worries troubled my sleep as they do at times in the city. Our first night tenting in the trees was one of my best sleeps in years with only one wake-up to pee. I had no intention of making the dark journey through unfamiliar terrain to use the out-house (which are scary enough in the daylight!) Armed with my trusty flashlight I slipped on my shoes, took two – then three steps away from the tent and froze.
Dark Shadows LoomA dark shadow moved! What was that?! Quickly I targeted it with my flashlight… shadows scurried away. My heart jumped, my mind raced – a bear - a cougar - a killer…? I clutched and waved my flashlight at the intruders… shadows loomed and lurched. Quick, go wake up Steve! Then, softly, succinctly, I heard my small, still voice whisper: “Turn off the flashlight.” My scared mind balked, “Oh sure! I am being attacked in the dark and I am supposed to turn off the flashlight!” Yet, I turned the flashlight off. Over the years I have learned to trust my small, still voice within despite how cryptic or illogical it may seem. For a moment I remained frozen in complete darkness until my eyes had time to adjust.
Behold the Light! Then, a light, soft and diffused, fell like fairy-dust. The faint, gentle, illumination dispelled the shifting shadows cast by the flashlight. Now, small bushes, ponderous trunks, reaching limbs and silent trees - all faintly luminescent – stirred awe not fear within me. My eyes rose. What cast this magical light? Behold! There, through the tree tops, piercing the night sky, stars blazed. I followed the wooded path a short distance to the beach. No moon lit this night but rather the glory of billions of stars! Here I, with my feeble light, limited scope, and narrow vision thought I could find the way alone.
A Metaphor for LifeA metaphor for life stirred my soul this night. How often do we clutch and wave our little light around, insisting we are in control, that we can find our way - the clarity, the direction, and what needs to be done with our limited vision? Waving our little light around, is akin to going round and round in our small mind, lost in thoughts, trying to control everything, yet only succeeding in scaring ourselves… and forgetting our true selves.
Turn off the light. Turn off the thoughts. Trust. Return home to the Big Mind, the one True Light, to your God. Let the infinite grandeur of what you are be your guide! This, my friends is our daily lifework.
So folks, I look forward to hearing from you. I think we could make this newletter more interesting and useful with your input - of which I haven't had a lot so far! I am sincerely looking forward to hearing your ideas, input, stories, thoughts, quotes, jokes?
