Reconnect with Your PassionFor the past few years I’ve wanted to expand my work – and have done so by facilitating new workshops at our local college and continuing to grow our website. Yet… the desire to express something more of myself has kept nudging me. Have you ever had that feeling? You just know there is something more for you to be doing – even if you’re not sure what that something is?
Say “Yes” to the Next StepWith our teenage son no longer needing so much time and attention, I knew the time for expanding my work had come. I designed a new course but still felt there was something missing. Somehow this wasn’t exactly my niche; my true calling. I was reluctant to present my idea to my college manager – even after she approached me to design and present a workshop of my own (exactly like the own I’d designed!) Yet, I was in awe of how opportunities appear when one says, “Yes, I am ready to take the next step,” (even if we are not totally clear on what that step is.) “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” Ralph Waldo Emerson That very night I was offered a once in a lifetime chance to be mentored by Valerie Young author of Changingcourse.com in her newly launched “Creative Career Consultant Certification” course. (And yes, I know I am already doing this – but now I am ready to move to the next level). Valerie has mentored with, and worked with Barbara Sher (leading author, speaker and “dream-maker guru”). I have gained much from Valerie’s work over the past few years and knew this was an important, timely next step for me.
Let Go of ResistanceFor many years, I have done all the exercises necessary in rediscovering one’s path, honing one’s life mission, reconnecting with one’s passions and talents. So, as I began Valerie’s pre-course assignments - spending two days writing once again about my beliefs, dreams, loves, interests - I wondered how could this possibly help me? However, I let my resistance go and just kept doing the work and trusting. The next morning as I sat down to do my morning journaling (which I attempt to be faithful to) again I felt resistance. This time I did not want to write about a repetitive feeling of dislike I have for some material I teach in one of my college courses. How many times can a person rehash what they don’t like about their work?!
Passion Stands The Test of TimeWhen I heard my small still voice say, “Sit. Write about it,” I did. As I wrote, a line came to me from the past two days of pre-course work (the relevance of which I had doubted). Gail Sheehy, author of “New Passages,” says you know you’ve uncovered your passions if it is something that stands the test of time or which causes you to lose all track of time – or both. In a flash, I understood why some material I had to deliver was a struggle for me. Those models were not in alignment with my innate talents and passions which have been with me for a lifetime. Although I learned the material well and did a good job teaching it, it did not come naturally to me. From this I was able to clearly define my passion and my life mission – which beautifully align with helping people discover their lifework. So my friends, gift yourself by journaling each morning. Ponder Gail Sheehy’s words. If you are disliking aspects of your work notice how these aspects do not sync up with what you have loved all your life. Heed your small still voice. Do all those self discovery exercises rather than skim them. Say “yes” to the next step in your life (even if it is not clear to you) and watch as opportunities and next steps appear! In closing, just to let you know, I may do another mailing in two weeks to announce the birth of my first e-book “Living Your Lifework.” Thanks for your stories and input. Warmest regards,
Teresa
