Create the Life and Work You Love

If you have been to yourlifework.com recently you may have noticed changes on the homepage. Summing up who I am and what I have to offer in about five words was a worthy challenge. However, our new heading and tag-line has been born, "Create the Life and Work You Love."

Putting "Life" first and "Work" second is no coincidence but rather the essence of my practice AND key to successful career transition. Without quality of life; health, peace of mind, love, and acceptance – how can we create the work we love?

A young woman I recently met working in a "body-building" store beautifully exemplified this.

For years she had been into fitness until a rare disease struck on her 21st birthday leaving her unable to rise from her bed that fateful morning. Numb and paralyzed from her toes to her waist, she was told there little hope of improvement with physiotherapy or medicine.

From a fitness buff to a couch potato (as she put it) led to months of severe depression and hopelessness. She gave up on herself and life.

Life Flows from Acceptance

Until, one day in the dark of her depression, her inner fire rekindled. Dam it! If this was to be her fate – alright then, she was would accept that - but she was going to have a life regardless!

From that pivotal moment on, when she felt brief moments of pain in her legs rather than just lie upon the couch she forced herself to move despite excruciating pain.

At first she could only manage the smallest of movements in her legs. A few days later she had a moment longer wherein she could move her legs, although suffering severe pain, before the numbness returned.

Day after day, month after month, with miniscule progress she was able to drag herself to the gym where she began climbing the stair master a few minutes at a time.

Slowly, painfully, day by day, over the period of a year and a half she worked her way back to walking, health and fitness.

Now she is a national contender in a competion for women’s figure, fitness, body building, and beauty pageant - plus she has trained other women along the way!

This utterly amazing young woman pinpointed her moment of acceptance and consequent decision to live life as the catalyst which restored her life. Through this she has created work she loves!

The Work First, Health Second Demise

Conversely, I met a not-yet-middle-age man recently who has suffered a quadruple by-pass and was in a state of constant anxiety and tension. Due to financial pressures and loss of his business he felt panicked to create new work.

With concern and sincerity at his apparent level of daily distress I suggested he focus on his health first. My comment was quickly brushed away with a remark of how that was out of his hands, and how he was on the hook waiting for the doctors to decide whether he would have surgery or not.

Searching for new work with an air of frantic desperation, we lose our quality of life and health. How can we possibly create the work we love from this place? With our minds and hearts full of worry and fear we cannot hear or see guidance from within or without.

Life First, Work Second

Acceptance is not abdicating or resigning ourselves to what life hands us. Abdicating and resigning are passive, powerless states whereas acceptance is an action - a movement within ourselves toward understanding/seeing life situations through a larger lens.

Coming from a life first, work second perspective invites us to accept whatever life has handed us and then, ponder how we can best proceed - with peace of mind. From here we can create the work we love.

So my friends, please remember on this journey to creating the life and work you love – put your LIFE first!
