The Year has Now Ended. Our Lives are Shorter.

Well, my friends, as yet another year draws to a close, it is time to ponder our life. To paraphrase Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk who is one of the world's great peacemakers:

"The year has now ended. Our lives are shorter. Now we look carefully. What have we done?"

As I ponder the past year I feel good about my new work achievements; courses I've completed; another certification near completion; and the growth of our business. However, what warms my heart is the summer vacation we took.

What is Most Important in Life, and at Life's End?

Five of us squished into one car, traveling through the spectacular Canadian Rocky Mountains to visit my brother and his family. What grace and wonder to have pulled our very cool, social, sixteen year old son from his peer group and cram him into the car with his mom and dad; and cousin and Auntie from England for a eight hour trip. Canoeing white water rapids(!); plummeting down a three story water slide(!); and playing in the wave pool; were but a few of the experiences my husband and I braved to share in our boy's sixteen year old joy.

What also stirs my heart, reflecting upon this past year, is being there for my husband and his mom as we helped his father through his final weeks on this earth. And then, the time we spent with good friends at their time-share condo when we sought respite from the grief.

Time spent with our loved ones is what warms our heart as we reflect upon the year's end and indeed, our life's end. Yet, how often is our family time pressured, compressed, stressed with work demands? How often are New Year's resolutions about work and financial goals which in the long run count little, if any?

Dump the New Year's Resolutions –
Aspire to Be More!

Rather than making New Year's Resolutions we would be better served to make New Year's Aspirations. Resolutions are based upon people self-willing themselves to do things. It is a jaw-clenching, striving-to-do stance. Aspirations arise from people desiring to ascend to something more. It is a heart-felt, way of being. Resolutions not achieved set us up for failure however, we never fail when we aspire to be more.

For instance, we'd be better served aspiring to love and care for ourselves everyday – as well as we possible can - rather than setting resolutions to quit smoking, to lose twenty pounds. (If people fail to keep their resolutions then they feel worse about themselves - smoking and eating more to cover the pain - hence, fuelling the cycle.) Also, if we aspired to love and care for ourselves and our families more everyday, we would likely reassess work that may be sucking our precious life away.

Begin with Your Life First; Work Second

In order to create the work we would love to do, it makes sense to begin with our LIFE first and work second. Yes, I know we have to pay the mortgage, and feed and clothe the kids! However, what is the point of making a living if it kills us?

Sadly, I have seen many clients who've spent a life-time putting work first and now are forced into career change because of 'burn-out' or "broken bodies." The price of putting work before our life is too high! We risk our health, precious relationships, and dreams due to lack of time and energy to invest in them after long days, commutes, excessive pressures or toxic environments.

Also, it's paramount to begin with your LIFE first to find the work you'd love to do because looking deeply into your life reveals your passions. Being very curious about who you are; what you love and value; and the life you want to live – are the elements to finding your passion or calling. Being clear on the life you want to live also, becomes your compass keeping you on course as you explore possible ideas for work.

Now We Look Carefully. What Have We Done?

What warms your heart most as you reflect upon this passing year? What is most important to you? Would you love to work from home, have more time for yourself, your family? Have more independence, time freedom, work with others, travel?

This New Year let us aspire to put our life first. Once we become clear on the life we want to live, we can then create the work that suits our life.

Blessings of health, peace, love, joy and right livelihood to you and your loved ones this New Year!

Warmest regards,

"There's something inside of you that knows when you're in the center, that knows when you're on the beam or off the beam. And if you get off the beam to earn money, you've lost your life."
