Avoid Buyer’s Remorse

Thinking of taking training, more education or certification to assist with your career change? This may be a good idea or not… To avoid buyer’s remorse consider a few factors. Expensive training programs and/or education do not guarantee you’ll make more money or create work you’d love. Proceed with due diligence before committing precious time and money into any education or training.

This is particularly true if you are in a vulnerable place like feeling trapped within a job; or having lost your job; or if feeling lost, inadequate, overwhelmed or uncertain. Ask yourself: Are you grasping at this training or education hoping it will transform your life somehow? We cannot make sound decisions for ourselves and our families from these states. Also, when we’re feeling vulnerable we’re more likely to fall prey to professional marketing tactics which target human frailties and desires.

What’s the Hurry?

I am wary of training programs with urgent limited time offers; of offers which play upon our fear, discontent and dreams should we miss the “golden opportunity.” Any training program pressuring me to make a decision NOW, has my decision – ‘No.”

Take the time to shop around, compare similar programs of study, check accreditation, and gather info from past grads (research comments on the internet) before spending your money. Check out if the training you are paying for will give you the certification and knowledge to begin working in the field afterwards. Or, as my husband and I were told after three intensive training days ‘you now have only enough info to be dangerous,’ and were then hit with the big up-sell for further expensive training!

Align Education with Who You Are

Also, before committing to further training (and there are so many choices) consider: Is the training in alignment with who you are; what you love to do; what your talents and gifts are; and, what is the best path for you to serve the world? If the training is not in alignment with your passions then likely the ‘fire’ needed to follow through and create work will fizzle after the training. Or, if a person does find work after their training/education but it was out of alignment with their passion - it may lead to years of unfulfilling work.

Which does not mean this was a ‘wrong’ decision. As Buckminster Fuller says there are no wrong decisions – only right and left decisions - and just like walking we need both to move forward. Every experience is part of our life unfolding according to its own nature and is full of gifts and lessons. It is never too late to start anew.

Are You Ready Now?

Lastly, before committing to education or training consider if you really need it. I am not saying ongoing learning is unimportant. For some people further training or education is exactly the key needed to build their skills, confidence and credibility to begin, or further their career.

However, in some cases I see people who are skilled, gifted and experienced enough to begin creating work they would love – now – without the expense of further education. So, before committing to a huge educational expense explore getting started in your interest area with the experience, gifts and skills you now possess. (Begin with friends, volunteer, job shadow… just begin.)

If you determine new training or further education to be your next step plan how you’ll pay for it and where you and/or your family may have to compensate. Believe you can do it if you persist. People make changes at every age.

Making sure you are taking training for the right reasons (and that you’ll benefit from it); with the best possible training company or institute; with a financial plan to recoup the money; and knowing that the training is in alignment with your passions will help avoid buyer’s remorse.

However, my friends if you are feeling remorse over money spent that didn’t work out how you thought it would - trust in the unfoldment of life. Great good can come from inexplicable ends.

Warmly,

Create the Life and Work You Love!
