Weary of “Dealing with Your Beliefs?”

Lately I’ve been seeing and hearing “How your attitude/belief toward money holds you back,” information everywhere. Not that this line of thinking is new by any means. Those of us who survived the ‘self-help’ and MLM decades spent plenty of time looking at our money issues and beliefs. Still, I question how well this scrutiny avails us.

Today, for example when I was reminded to query my ‘money attitude’ in a recent article sent to me, I noticed how unsettled both my husband and I became as we spoke of our ‘money issues.’ The simple peace we were enjoying a moment before while quietly sitting was gone. Angst grew as we delved into our ‘issues and beliefs’ we know ever-so-well from years of self introspection.

“Ah-ha! So, you still have money-issues,” I might herein be accused of (as a financial advisor once said to me when I spoke my concerns of losing a long time contract of mine.) And yes, I will be the first to admit some queer ideas and beliefs about money nibble at me from time to time. Also, in the same breath I will admit I am human and at times suffer from deep feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness (with which the ‘money issues’ are intertwined).

“What brings me more peace in my life?”

Yet, even knowing all of this I’ve discovered laying the “I have got to deal with my money issues/beliefs” trip on myself not helpful. For over a year now I have been journaling about: “What brings me more peace in my life?” and “What causes me more suffering?” The “I’ve got to deal with my money issues/beliefs” definitely falls into the latter. I lose my peace as my angst and fear mount. I have enough awareness to know this is not about my denial.

“I’ve got to deal with my money issues/beliefs” knocks me off center because it implies there is something in me I need to fix… feeding into the thinking I am somehow less than (which is commonly at the core of the human condition.) Of course, this does not mean I feed the thinking that says I’m unworthy or there isn’t enough for me.

I have seen how this ‘scary’ thinking is just that – thoughts. The thoughts usually have little to due with the present moment and arise from past or future fears. It is helpful to acknowledge these thoughts and fears with compassion and then, let them go.

Present, Sincere and Trusting

We can take some guidance from the Viking Ruins - an ancient oracle - on this matter of beliefs. The “Wunjo” Ruin I pulled the other day had some of the best wisdom for dealing with money, fear and life: “And so, focused in the present, sincere toward others and trusting in your process (and God), you cannot fail.”

I love this simple, kind and serendipitous way of living rather than the heroic self-willed efforts to change. Interestingly, as we give up the self-willing and fixing; and focus on being present, sincere and trusting we are shaped and transmuted by the process itself.

So, my friends, try it for yourself. Next time the fear, angst or money worry comes to visit see if sitting, breathing, quieting your mind in the present moment; and being sincere and trusting doesn’t shift something for you.

Kind regards,
