"Are Old Beliefs Haunting You?”Coming to peace with past hurts and old beliefs seems to be something we are called to do time and again. Take the last newsletter I sent you on “Making Peace with Money Distress.” Many times I’ve made peace with my money distress only to be haunted by the ‘money’ thing again. So, although not planned I find myself compelled to write the second instalment of “Making Peace with Money Distress.” Feeling money distress yet again during month-end bill payment was another awakening. Curious - my husband and I are the best-off we’ve ever been in our lives; live a debt free, simple abundance yet still suffer money angst. When my money distress surfaced this time - rather than ping-pong between avoidance and blame - I wrote down my churning thoughts.
"Never Enough"“No matter how hard I work, what I do, there is never enough,” was the central theme. Exploring the fear under this line I heard “No matter how hard I work, what I do, I’m afraid it’ll all unravel, I am not really capable, I’m never enough.” It is not about the money but rather about an old belief that I am not enough; that somehow I always fall short. Then, my feelings of “not being enough – falling short” are projected onto the money. (Although intellectually I know I am capable and will do well enough this core belief still haunts me and affects my life.) As I write this I now recall that when I owned my stores for ten years and had over $370,000. revenue I still had a ‘shortage.’ Also, I see how this fear has affected my work and well-being as I over-pressure myself to get the job done. Looking deeper I can see how this belief ‘there’s not enough - I am not enough’ subtly pervades my marriage as a part of me is tempted to grasp and divide money.
"Healing Old Beliefs"So, how do we heal this feeling of somehow not measuring up; of not being enough? Certainly, bringing the light of non-judgemental awareness onto our beliefs and habitual patterns begins to transform things. Recite affirmations some say. For years I practised affirmations with perhaps some good coming of it. However, I think affirmations don’t stick for most people because they don’t believe them. What if we substituted those old beliefs of “I can’t do it; I’m not good enough or smart enough or capable enough” with true statements based on facts from our life? Try this exercise I assign in my “Create the Life and Work You Love” workshop. Develop a list of your personal assets (at least 25). Include things that go on a resume but also things like: 10 years of personal study in health and wellness; 20 years experience as a musician; well-read in the areas of…; story-teller; life-long entrepreneur; a mother of three; overcame…; naturally gifted at; achieved; passionate about; most enjoyable skills; major life experiences; most proud of; survived; learned well…; grown how… etc…
“We Are So Much More Than We Think”After doing this I condensed my list into a few powerful sentences which I now read frequently – especially when my old beliefs about who I am are triggered. You know friends, when I read my personal asset page - I believe it, feel comforted and stronger. And all of us are so much more than our wonderful personal assets and experiences! Can you see how much you really are? Can you see how capable and accomplished you really are? Can you see your beauty?
Kind regards,
