Fervent Passion Expressed

One of my favourite shows is about remarkable people who grow exceptional gardens. I delight in the beauty of their Edens but more so, I am inspired by these people’s fervent passion. One couple’s passionate spirituality grew a holy garden retreat. An aged mariner’s lifetime passion for rhodos grew a grand rhododendron forest.

Then, on last night’s show apartment dweller, Gayla Trail, brought life and beauty to unlikely urban nooks and rooftops with her passion for growing things. What totally captured me was how this woman expressed her passion in a manner so utterly, authentically herself.

With unfettered passion, Gayla spoke of how growing things teaches people about life, heals the past and builds a better community and environment. From the birth of her highly successful website, www.yougrowgirl.com, she refused to be boxed into the role of ‘gardener’ or that of being the expert. Instead she chose to humbly and freely assert her truest self and is uniquely making a difference in the city of Toronto.

Living in Boxes vs Being our True Self

How that resonates with me. Over the past year with so many changes occurring in my life – I know I am being called to a deeper level of authenticity. I feel called to expand myself beyond the ‘career guru’ role; the ‘we must write/speak about what people want to hear’ box; and from the ‘mothering’ role. It is not that I am throwing out my business or our son (!) or, that I am totally clear where this letting go is taking me. Yet, through simply acknowledging these truths tapping at my soul I somehow feel freer, more authentic… Isn’t this the key to unlocking our passion?

If we just give our inner promptings, our creative impulses some acknowledgement – be it digging in the dirt or voicing a buried truth – we can fan the flame of passions forgotten. Instead of focusing on being ‘lost, confused or clueless’ can we trust we are assuredly on the path and pay attention to the clues? Be alert to clues like tiny intuitions, inspirations, and ideas bubbling up from within and flowing from the world - indeed God - all the time.

Are there creative stirrings or buried truths you have perhaps pushed aside trying to fit the mould or covered with confusion? Dear friend, can you speak these inklings, try them on or at least write of them in a journal for yourself?

Paying Attention

A powerful clue to your purpose and passion is paying attention to what-you-pay-attention-to according to Carol Adrienne author of “The Purpose of Your Life.” In her words, “…you will only pay attention to what makes sense to you, and which somehow relates to your deeper purpose…Trust your inner selection process instead of continuing to give energy to confusion, fear, and over control.”

Also, can we stop judging where we are on our path? Can we stop being inquisitors about what is our purpose, what is our passion, what is it we love to do, what is our ideal job? Fixating our energy on judging our process takes our energy away from relaxing into the moment, trusting the flow and seeing all the miraculous ways God speaks to us.

Purpose and passion are not things or goals to be achieved but rather expressions of our being unfolding in each moment. Rather than striving to make things happen let us practise fully ‘being’ and notice what captures our attention every day. Herein, we live a life of purpose and passion.

Blessings to you all,

Fostering Depth and Sacredness in Everyday Life...
