Table of Contents 1. God in the Darkness 2. A Childhood Awakening 3. Remember Your God-ness and Gifts God in the DarknessRecently, I watched part of a TV interview with a very successful, singer/song writer (I did not catch her name) who spoke openly of her darkest hour and also, of a magical, childhood awakening to her gifts. Her heartfelt stories point toward the truth of our God and gifts. Humbly this great artist spoke of being pulled into the darkest depth of her soul. All was carved away ‘til only the last shred of indivisive self remained. Far down in the darkness - struggling with her mind’s tortuous thinking, issues of food, and depression - she saw no possibility of ever singing/writing or doing anything again. And then…oh then! The clouds parted, the sun peaked out, a gentle breeze blew upon her cheek. She told the interviewer: “It was as though the Universe were saying, ‘There, there…’ all-the-while lovingly caressing my cheek. And then, once again I found I could write.” Ah... the human condition. Despite being so apparently gifted this bright star suffered recurring despair and self doubt. And, even when she least expected it – had given up all hope – God was there comforting and nourishing her. I drew solace from her shared humanity and the God she found there… the God who is surely always there – even when we know not. A Childhood AwakeningNext this singer spoke of a magical childhood awakening she had while listening to one of her father’s vinyl records. It was a piece of great classical music rearranged with a unique, revitalized Latino edge. Upon hearing that inspired piece of classical music she recalled being awakened to the wonder of truly great music. She didn’t know she would grow up to be a singer/songwriter but looking back saw how that masterful music captured her young girl’s heart. Her passion, her gift, her very soul spoke to her through that musical experience early in life. Her story reminded me of a childhood summer holiday in the Okanagan. I was sitting cross-legged on the floor along with five or six other children belonging to my parent’s friends. We children were gathered around a vinyl record playing, “The Tale of the Ugly Duckling,” my first experience with recorded, professional story-telling. I wept as the ugly duckling was rejected by her family and friends. In the end, when the ugly duckling discovered the truth of her beauty and being (reflected in the still waters), I rejoiced. Clearly, I remember the deep awe this masterful storytelling awoke within me. As the singer/song writer’s young heart was captured by great music – likewise my childhood heart was enthralled by the power storytelling. My passion, my gift and my very soul also, were calling me to live the truth imbedded within that story’s content. Like the ugly duckling (and the singer I wrote of) we humans suffer self doubts and feelings of unworthiness all-the-while forgetting or not knowing we are beings of great beauty. Returning to the ‘still waters’ within we see the truth of our God-ness even as we practice compassion for our frail humanness. This is the story I feel compelled to fully know and tell the world. Remember Your God-ness and Gifts…My dear friend, I wonder what great passion was stirred for you when you were a child? Look closely. See your God-ness and your gifts reflected within your life and the stillness of your being. As surely as you were born you are a being of great beauty and gifts… Until next month,
