In last month’s e-zine I wrote: “Lifework is that to which one devotes one’s energies. It is both, the work of the soul as well as the material work done in the visible world.” A reader replied, “Many people working in the world of corporations feel there’s a better way to thrive there. Not that they're necessarily terrible places--in my experience they're not--but they’re very goal-driven and action-oriented and it's very easy to find oneself carried along in the current losing sight of one's own non-material needs and goals. I would be interested in more suggestions of bringing the "sacred" into the workplace and the ordinary ‘work’ of living.”

Firstly, I would suggest ask your guidance, your God (the God of your understanding). At a deep level we all have the answers we seek within. Ask, “How can I bring the sacred into my daily life and work and nourish myself and others?” Write the question in your journal, tuck it into your heart, and take the question with you on an afternoon retreat to nature. Hold the question dear as you go about your daily work and life.

As often as you can remember stop… Take three deep breaths in and out. Enter present moment awareness. Look for the sacred in everything. Be open to hearing God speak the answer you seek in an infinity of astonishing ways.

Last week I took a similar heart question within me and spoke it aloud to our beautiful Kalamalka Lake. “Thank you for Thy continued guidance - How can I continue to best use my gifts and serve others following Thy will for my life?” A dream came to me that very night...

I am preparing to facilitate a program I supposedly know very well (and in waking life facilitated at the college for 15 years) but the venue is all wrong. Rather than a program room in the college I am in a lounge restaurant - futilely trying to arrange tables for my presentation. Participants are arriving. A woman tells me my participants also expect me to serve food. Worried, I look at a fancy recipe card and am relieved to see the recipe is “Beans on Toast.” I know I can serve beans on toast and in the dream this food seems fitting.

As in similar past dreams of mine, I am feeling inadequate, unsure of what I’m to teach and trying to cover-up my insecurity with my intelligence, crafted words, and self assessment tools. In the dream, I am shocked realizing I can no longer hide my inadequacy this way. I no longer work at the college! I have no access to those tools. I awaken fearful and distraught.

Upon awakening I am frustrated by this recurring dream of inadequacy haunting me for decades. For years I have faced and embraced this old ghost... (Now Teresa; ‘Is wanting something to go away - embracing it?’) A part of me balked at journaling this “old junk” dream yet one more time but I know better. After writing my dreams for twenty-five years I know avoiding my dreams – especially one packed with emotion and resistance - would be a great loss of guidance and deepening of self.

After a few days of rereading my dream and writing many insights I was gifted with profound guiding wisdom. The prayer I’d voiced beside the lake asking how to better use my gifts and to serve others was answered. “Teresa, serve beans on toast.” Really?

Beans on toast have been a long-time staple in our family. After soaking a huge pot of mixed organic beans overnight, I simmer them with spices and crushed tomatoes. I then spoon the beans onto toasted organic, sprouted grain bread and melt cheese atop under the broiler. This high protein, very nourishing, healthy food is my OWN creation that I know intimately well.

My dream wisdom was saying I am beyond trying to hide my fear of not being good enough – of trying to prove my worth or the worth of my knowing – through clinging to intellectual charades, left-brain tools, credentials, or control. Instead, my guidance said, in order to better use my gifts in service to others serve simple wholesome food that I know well and that nourishes me. In this I will also feed others.

When we express what we deeply know, express what we do from love and are personally nourished by it – the world is also fed. What do you know deep in your bones and do with love above all else – that nourishes you? Here lies your God-ness and gifts you are called to express in the world!

Each of us has our answers within - sometimes we just need to listen more deeply, practice more patience, solitude, reflection, contemplation and sharing with someone who listens and cares.
