Hades at the Helm

Last month I wrote of K. D. Lang’s mournful, inspirational singing of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah” song at the Olympic ceremony. I wrote, “The lyrics remind us – that both the perfect AND broken moments of life have equal value and meaning. We are called to sing “Hallelujah” through ALL of life’s offerings. Hallelujah, from Hebrew meaning “Let us praise.”

How ironic. Over the past three and a half weeks we had to put one of our Siamese cats down and then, a week later my husband’s dear mother died. I didn’t write my end of March ezine not wanting to depress you. Now the idea of singing praise for all of life’s offerings falls dismally flat.

For weeks a heavy, dark, weight has shadowed us - removing us from the daylight world others move and live within. Hades at the helm of our life.

Hallelujah

Then, little memories – priceless treasures - bubble up…
My husband Steve and I driving to Keremeos every two weeks (2.5 hrs one way) and staying overnight to see Mom (Dorothy)… My husband and I taking Mom out for supper, lunches, on many lovely drives, visiting her brother and to the petting zoo.

Then we realize, since Steve's Dad died three years ago, how very much love and care we’ve given dear Dorothy… A moment of feeling so very good about this… A moment of good grief. Hallelujah.

Dear Dorothy and I often spoke fondly of our love for one another. She lost her daughter years ago and was happy to find me – to once again have a daughter to love. Likewise I loved her as my own mother who'd been lost to me ten years ago after a battle with cancer. Hallelujah.

For Whom the Bell Tolls

Although we know our parents will likely die before we do - still it is a HUGE hole and shock. Dorothy’s passing hit hard too because - as our son reminded us - we now have NO parents. Orphans.

Not that I am dwelling on it but never-the-less the reality is here: Steve and I are next in line. We are now the 'older' generation. Although this thinking is a little scary and unsettling we sense the gift of preparatory rightness for the day we too, shall shed our earthly skin.

And too, in the midst of knowing – feeling – ALL of this heaviness we are uplifted by life’s little joys. Sunlight warms our faces on a cool, grey day. Bright being-ness from a bed of yellow and orange tulips greet us. Our ‘Wugi’ cat, missing his brother, sleeps curled between us. Hallelujah.

Until next month… Blessings to you all,
