Summer always seems so busy. Of course, our fourteen year old boy, living summer full blast adds to the foray! Then, we have added our marriage this August to the mix of relatives visiting, working and routines gone awry. It is all very exciting, stressful and full of miracles. Although we have been living together for four years and call each other husband and wife; I am amazed at how “officially” getting married invokes so much. As author and psychologist James Hillman forewarns, “When two people marry all of the Gods are called in!” The gods of love, peace, money, war and fear have come visiting! More importantly, we have felt the hand of God working in our life. The Marriage ClutchWe faced one of our first wedding challenges when the $800. we had painstakingly saved for our humble marriage was absconded by the car in need of a new clutch. You guessed it $800.00. For a moment our marriage was caught in the clutch. No money. Oh no! Now we’ll have to delay our wedding. The clutch of fear and doubt. The clutch called us to deeply reassess why we were getting married. Was it about a reception with friends (not that $800. would’ve gone too far). Was it about rings, dresses, flowers, cakes, entertainment, etc... And then there was the big “What people will think?” of such a frugal marriage. Did we want to postpone our wedding, as it appears money will not be an issue for us next year? Or was this next step in our love, important now? We decided to make our love a priority and are proceeding on faith. We’ve escaped the clutch of fear and doubt – for now anyway. Miracles are HappeningAlthough I am divorced I’ve never had a church wedding and this time it was in my heart to marry in a house of God. This seemed unlikely, as we don’t have a church home. So, only in passing, did I mention my wish to marry in a church to Steve (my love). Steve then spoke with the pastor at the small church wherein Steve has attended AA meetings for the past fifteen years. Pastor Tim said he would be delighted to marry us and could give our humble gathering the church - at no cost. Such providence! This is the same beautiful church wherein Steve and I knelt, three years ago, vowing to spend our lives together before one another and God. Within this same lovely church, Steve and I at times sat prayerfully after AA meetings. Carved upon a wooden plaque at the front of this holy church is the quote: “In quietness and trust is my strength,” Isaiah 30:15. Steve and I were both so moved by this verse it has become a life mantra to us. What a gift to be married within this church, so full of special memories for Steve and me! Some people call these coincidences or synchronicities. I see God working miracles in our lives. Journaling MiraclesJulia Cameron, author of “The Artist’s Way” recommends being on the look-out for, and journaling any synchronicities in our lives. She also recommends beginning each day with journaling three morning pages before anything else. This is part of her twelve week course “Discovering and Recovering Your Creative Self” which I am near completing. Julia says, the more we pay attention to and record synchronicities the more they appear. This I can attest to with certainty. I have been on the look-out for God/synchronicities - call it what you will – in my life for many years and see miracles in my life daily. Even if you can’t make the time for “The Artist’s Way,” or committing to three morning pages I would strongly encourage you to commit to writing in your journal everyday. I used to write every night and have found it more beneficial for my sleep and more insightful for my writing to write morning pages. And yes, some days it requires getting up a half hour earlier than what already seems too early. Fit journaling daily into your life however you can – even if you have nothing to say. Simply resting with the page can be a wonderful exercise. As Julia says this is not about trying to think something up “straining to reach for something that’s just beyond our grasp.” Rather, “when we are getting something down, there is no strain. We’re not doing; we’re getting. Something else is doing the doing…we are engaged in listening.” Try it. Do not judge your writing. Let it be as boring, trivial, vital as it is. This helps us exorcise all the stuff blocking us and frees up our creativity. It helps connect with our inner guidance and truth. Within my morning pages I have clearly come to see the difference between the harmful, bossy voice within and the small, still voice of my God. Want to read more about following the Voice of Your Heart in work and life? Click here to read the new page I recently posted,“Career with Heart,” on our website. Coming closer to your inner truth will help you in every corner of your life whether you are trying to make a career decision, looking for miracles, or wanting more enjoyment at work or in life. The Fish PhilosophyUse the Fish Philosophy to find more enjoyment at work and in life. There is an open-air fish market in Seattle’s Pike Place Market that has gone from a smelly, tough, money-squeezed little business to being world famous. The staff actually fling fish over customers and countertops to the crew behind doing the cutting and wrapping. The staff all wear T-shirts saying, “Beware of Low Flying Fish.” The antics of the fish-flinging staff are the highlight of the market and their Fish Philosophy has found world-wide favor as a “teaching” model in the workplace. They are such a huge success because of the unique Fish Philosophy they created and live. One philosophy is: Play – really enjoy everything you do – even if it is working with smelly fish! Be There: is another key Fish Philosophy that can transform our lives. Rather than thinking about other things when talking to people, practice intentionally being there with them right now, in the present moment, fully person to person. Do you know how good this feels to have someone fully there and listening to you? What a gift to give to the ones we love and the world! I wouldn’t have expected a quote by Albert Einstein coming from a fish market but here it is. I cut and pasted this most appropriate thought form the Pike Place Fish website: "A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe,' a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." - Albert Einstein Let us begin by Being There! How are you feeling today? Crummy? Have to get up too early? Well, try another Fish Philosophy: Choose Your Attitude. It ain’t easy slinging and chopping fish all day but these guys are having fun! We can too. Moods come and go. There are so many we need to just let go of. For more fun visit www.pikeplacefish.com. I would love to hear from you!
