From Unemployment to
Self Employment

Choosing self employment is a possibility worth exploring for many who have suffered job loss or need a change. In Canada and around the world staggering job losses are mounting with the economic melt down. The loss of a job and so-called security can be shocking and painful.

Yet, many people coming through my workshops have found relief being released from a job they had not enjoyed for years but couldn't live without the pay check. No where in today's world are we guaranteed protection from the tidal wave of technology, information and change deluging our planet.

We certainly know self employment does not guarantee security. Ultimately, our security must come from within. Our jobs are not the source of life's abundance and goodness (and yes, we need to pay the bills.)

However, rather than feeling hopelessly trapped within a job (or without a job) people are considering self employment and learning the benefits of working from home, in numbers never seen before. At some level, the entrepreneurial spirit resides within each of us.

Rekindle Your Entrepreneurial Spirt

Rekindling our entrepreneurial spirit is not about re-mortgaging the house or going into debt. The entrepreneurial spirit is about listening to, and acting upon our inner authority and dreams. It is about taking a few chances in life and believing we have something to offer the world.

It is about the desire to be one's own boss, have more time freedom and enjoy self employment. Even if we work for someone else, we can hone our entrepreneurial spirit by thinking of ourselves as the head of our own company, "Me Inc."

You are in charge of your life and work even if you work for someone else's company. This spirit can light our way anywhere and add depth and sacredness to our work.

This entrepreneurial spirit burns within each of us.

We are constantly being given glimmers of our talents and uniqueness. We need only to listen, to trust and to follow through. What do you have to offer that is unique and special?

Do you find it easier to help others find their unique niche rather than your own? Do you just naturally enjoy coaching, supporting and encouraging others to find their answers and be their best? Perhaps, you can take a first step by exporing the world of coaching.

We need to trust our own unique expression! Heeding our inner authority will help us survive todays uncertain, volatile times. Why not start taking small steps now toward something different?

Every Journey Begins with a Single Step

Stretch your comfort zone even a little bit. Consider taking a correspondence or night course in something that interests you.

Try volunteering a few hours in a field you are interested in to determine if it feels right for you. Talk to people working in the industry you're interested in and learn what it would take to work there.

Investigate starting your own business and more fully expressing your passion. Everyone has a passion or a keen special interest.

Spend a few minutes researching successful sites built by SBI owners and you'll see your special knowledge is being sought on the Internet. Through viewing these sites we realized we could do what they had done.

Millions of jobs have been lost because of technology but untold work and opportunity has been created because of it. You may be thinking this stuff is only for artists or great business minds. No!

We all have a special knowledge and unique background to write from! Most of us just need the help getting it out there.

The World Needs Your Talents and Gifts

< There is vast work to be done on this planet and the world needs what you have to offer. Only you can express and offer your gifts and talents! You're not clear on what you have to offer?

You may be surprised how much you have to offer the world if you will take some time to answer the following questions. List any ideas or answers you may have to following questions - without judgement.

1. What do you love to talk about, read about, or do for fun or as a hobby? What have you learned just by doing it?

2. Do you have some great advice for single moms, hockey puck guys or how to groom dreadlocks? Do you have solutions to problems in your home, family, workplace, or the world?

3. Would you love to write book reviews, movie chatter, resumes, recipes; edit e-zines, e-books, essays for others; or write about animal care or the stars...? What courses or schooling have you taken that you feel passionate about? Any of these could be successful self employment options!

4. Now, don't forget to review your past. Ask yourself these same questions but going back 5 - 10 - 20 years into your past. Do not allow your inner critic to invalidate your ideas before you begin!

You have special knowledge that other people value. No one can express what you know in the manner you see it. You are unique. Opportunities are endless; but you must begin with a single step.
