From Unemployment to
Self Employment

Self employment is worth exploring if you have suffered job loss or need a change. In Canada and around the world staggering job losses are mounting with the economic melt down. The loss of a job and so-called security can be shocking and painful.

Yet, many people coming through my workshops have found relief being released from a job they had not enjoyed for years but couldn't live without the pay check. One man labeled it, "Golden hand-cuffs."

No where in today's world are we guaranteed protection from the tidal wave of technology, information and change deluging our planet. We certainly know self employment does not guarantee security. Ultimately, our security must come from within. Our jobs are not the source of life's abundance and goodness (and yes, we need to pay the bills.)

However, rather than feeling hopelessly trapped within a job (or without a job) people are considering self employment and longing for the benefits of working from home.

At some level, the entrepreneurial spirit resides within each of us.

Rekindle Your Entrepreneurial Spirt

Rekindling your entrepreneurial spirit is not about re-mortgaging the house or going into debt. The entrepreneurial spirit is about listening to, and acting upon your inner authority and dreams. It is about taking a few chances in life and believing you have something to offer the world.

It is about the desire to be one's own boss, have more time freedom and enjoy self employment. Yet, even if we DO work for someone else we can hone our entrepreneurial spirit by thinking of ourselves as the head of our own company, "Me Inc."

You are in charge of your life and work even if you work for someone else. This spirit can light our way anywhere and add depth and sacredness to our work.

This entrepreneurial spirit burns within each of us.

We are constantly being given glimmers of our talents and uniqueness. We need only to listen, to trust and to follow through. What do you have to offer that is unique and special?

Here is a partial quote of a poem by - Martha Graham and Agnes Demille - that affirms our unique gift.

We need to trust our own unique expression! Heeding our inner authority will help us survive today's uncertain, volatile times. Why not start taking small steps now toward something different?

Every Journey Begins with a Single Step

Stretch your comfort zone even a little bit. Consider taking a correspondence or night course in something that interests you.

Try volunteering a few hours in a field you are interested in to determine if it feels right for you. Talk to people working in the industry you're interested in and learn what it would take to work there.

Investigate starting your own business and more fully expressing your passion. Everyone has a passion or a keen special interest.

Spend a few minutes researching successful sites built by SBI owners and you'll see your special knowledge is being sought on the Internet. Through viewing these sites we realized we could do what they had done.

You may be thinking this stuff is only for artists or great business minds. No!

You have special knowledge that other people value. No one can express what you know in the manner you see it. You are unique. Opportunities are endless; but you must begin with a single step.
