“Everywhere the world is alive and breathes, and we can absorb its spirit.”
Still, too easily the pressures of everyday life can seem to sever our connection with that wondrous Spirit. Then, we can get caught on the treadmill of seeking meaning in life and work while our anxious insecurity mounts.
Seeking meaning in life in order to relieve ourselves of anxious insecurity - so common within our culture - only pulls us from our true self. Thomas Moore, author of “Care of the Soul” says this:
“…fundamental anxiety can be relieved more by living a meaningful life than by any quest for meaning, and life itself becomes meaningful when we discover its interiority, its soul, its capacity to entrance and enchant.”
“We seem to always be reaching for an elusive goal, rather than loving the world in front of our eyes, just as we put anxious effort into becoming a new person, instead of loving and living the life we’ve always had and always will have.” - Spiritual sayings by Thomas Moore
I find great comfort in these words. We can stop our pushing and striving to find meaning or to achieve some great result. Instead, we can choose a meaningful path by looking deeply within ourselves and every moment of our everyday life.
Matthew Fox, author of “Creation Spirituality” tells us of the power of path: “Taking a path is different from driving down a highway to work. A path has something personal about it; it implies choice or even mystery… A path is a meandering walk-way – you do not rush or even drive down a pathway. A path is not goal oriented. A path is the way itself, and every moment on it is a holy moment; a sacred seeing goes on there.”
We don’t have to get Somewhere or be Somebody. These spiritual sayings tell us it is about BEING HERE. It is about fostering depth and sacredness in our everyday life. And too, we give meaning to our life through loving.
Mother Teresa offers spiritual sayings on how to do just that: “Do not pursue spectacular deeds… What matters is the gift of yourself, the degree of love you put into each one of your actions.” Or..
“At the end of our life, we shall be judged by love.” Saint John of the Cross
Rather than seeking a meaningful life or work – instead live a meaningful life and work by consciously pouring love into each action… by living life from the inside-out.
