Where Do I Start?

by Bruce
(Arizona)

Hi. For several years I've had a deep and strong feeling that I'm supposed to be doing something with my life other than what I'm doing now. On the outside it appears my life is perfect. I have a job many people would want themselves, many nice material things, and a terrific family.

However, on the inside I KNOW that I'm supposed to be doing something else. This may sound strange, but I feel I have true greatness to offer the world. I don't mean that I think I'm supposed to be the next U.S. President or that I'll find the cure for cancer.

It means that there is some calling which I haven't found yet, that would be personally satisfying to me and will make the world a better place. My greatness may be as simple as teaching English to children in a third-world country.

A little different angle...
by: Dennis

It could be worth your while to ponder the question, "Am I really seeing the beauty of the things I have in my life already?" You are probably already doing wonderful things for which you give yourself little credit.

This is not to say you should not be open to new things. In my own case, though, the many times I've experienced a longing for what I did not have were usually more about my blindness to present circumstances than about the circumstances themselves.

Begin Within
by: Anonymous

Hi Bruce; Thanks for your heart-felt query. I suspect every person reading this knows of what you speak within their own heart. I know I do.

Throughout my life I've traveled the world, owned and loved my own businesses, have a loving family yet still the longing to fully express that Something inside of myself to the world persists. Not in a way that I resent or that causes discontentment with my life but in a way that keeps calling.

I believe this Calling is within every human being. Each of us is a spark of the Divine and that part of our highest self is always calling us to fully express our true selves in the world.

This doesn't necessarily mean we begin by quitting our jobs and heading off to a developing country to teach English. Or it might! (How very interesting you would include that in your letter). How do we know where to start?

I've found spending quiet time wherein I practice being fully present, praying and stilling my body and mind is the place to start to discern the voice of my inner guidance/calling over the busy-mind. Even if we can only stop for ten minutes, 2 or 3 times a day it all helps to reconnect us. Even if our mind wanders, we just gently return to our stillness and breathing and present moment awareness. Over and over. The answers you seek are within you... Seek and ye shall find.

Daily, each morning I journal. I ask my God (Source, Higher Power/Self) for guidance. Then, I tuck that query into my heart for the day (ie. "How may I more fully express my gifts in the world?") or at times, take myself and my query on retreats to nature, alone. I pay attention to and journal the daily miracles, the amazing ways God speaks to me, answers my prayers, and guides me.

I journal my dreams which also guide me. I stop often in a day and listen within. More and more frequently soft still whispers arise from my being's core. I follow little inspirations that bubble up from deep inside of me, "Do this now, or..stop."

Bruce, it seems quite uncanny that your last line would be; "My greatness may be as simple as teaching English to children in a third-world country." Why did you write this? If that deeply resonates with you, fully explore it and also, look around where you live - you might be able to find similar fulfillment/need.

Also, pay attention to where you lovingly pour most of your attention (what you read, talk about, write about most of all, interests that have been there all of your life). Herein are clues to your passion longing for expression.

Ultimately, within this last sentence of yours you pinpointed the Way. Expressing this greatness within us in the world IS simple and can only be done in this one present moment. Where do you start?

Start now... here. Trust the answers you seek, are within you and guiding you in many ways in each moment - NOW. Truly, the world needs the greatness within you - within all of us - to make our world a better, healthier place for all!
